The Story

The 29th president, who served from 1921 to 1923, was Warren Gamaliel Harding. He was born in Blooming Grove, Ohio, in 1865.

Harding went to college in Ohio and later took turns as a teacher, an insurance salesman, and a newspaper publisher. Before becoming president, he served Ohio as a state senator, lieutenant governor, and U.S. senator.

Harding won the Republican nomination for president in 1920. He went on to win an unprecedented 60 percent of the popular vote.

President Harding authorized the Grant Memorial commemorative coins (gold dollar and half dollar), the Monroe Doctrine Centennial commemorative half dollar, and the Huguenot-Walloon Tercentenary commemorative half dollar.

Harding died of a heart attack in 1923, just two years into his term.
