The Story

President James Buchanan was not married. As is the case with all unmarried presidents, his First Spouse coin is modeled after a coin in use during his term.

The front of James Buchanan’s First Spouse coin is a reproduction of the Liberty Head quarter eagle designed by Christian Gobrecht. This $2.50 coin was issued from 1840 through 1907.

Reverse Design

The design on the coin’s back is by Artistic Infusion Program Associate Designer David Westwood. It shows President Buchanan as a boy keeping the books in his family’s small country store.
