The Story
To commemorate the National Park Service (NPS) and its stewardship of America’s national parks, the Unites States minted 100,000 National Park Service Centennial gold $5 coins, 500,000 silver $1 coins, and 750,000 half-dollar clad coins in honor of the agency’s 2016 centennial. Since President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation to create the agency in 1916, NPS has overseen approximately 400 sites covering about 84 million acres in the United States and its territories.
The National Park Service:
- Manages national parks, as well as monuments, battlefields, military parks, historical parks and sites, lakeshores, seashores, recreation areas, scenic rivers and trails, and the White House
- Employs 20,000 site caretakers, who manage sites with help from dedicated volunteers and park partners
- Hosts more than 275 million visitors to its sites annually
