Coin Description

Reverse

Gold: Features two symbols. The five interlocked rings have been used to symbolize the Olympic Games since the Olympic Flag was created in the early 20th century. The eagle symbolizes the United States.

Silver: Features the Olympic rings, upright olive branches, and a shield of stars and stripes.

Clad: Features a torch (symbol of the Olympic Games) and an olive branch (symbol of peace). The words "Citius, Altius, Fortius," the Olympic motto, mean "Faster, Higher, Stronger."

Obverse

Gold: Shows a sprinter in a burst of speed.

Silver: Shows a pitcher firing a ball to home plate. Uncirculated dollars made in Denver have the phrase "XXV Olympiad" impressed four times around the edge on a reeded background.

Clad: Shows a gymnast suspended in mid-air with the American flag behind her.

The Story

The Barcelona Olympics Commemorative Coin Program honors American athletes that competed in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. The money raised from the program helped finance their training. The program includes the gold $5 coin, silver dollar coin, and clad half-dollar coin.
