Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Coins
Coin Description
The Story
Almost fifty years ago, many Americans watched history being made on their televisions as Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” E. Aldrin, Jr. took mankind’s first steps on the moon on July 20, 1969. At 10:56 p.m. EDT, Armstrong took the first step on the moon and proclaimed, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”
The Apollo 11 crew, including Armstrong, Aldrin, and Michael Collins, returned safely to Earth on July 24, 1969.
This historic achievement required the hard work of an estimated 400,000 Americans. The Apollo 11 landing inspired generations of American students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). It also fueled innovation and economic growth throughout a range of industries over the last four decades.
