The Story
The Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site is in Tuskegee, Alabama. The historic site honors the achievements of the Tuskegee Airmen and preserves five structures at Morton Field.
The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American pilots who flew for the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. This included 1,000 pilots and more than 15,000 support staff of men and women of diverse backgrounds. Their unique military record inspired reform in the Armed Forces.
The quarter’s design features a pilot at Morton Field flight training facility. The words, “THEY FOUGHT TWO WARS” refers to fighting abroad in World War II as well as racism at home.
