The Story

Number 22 in the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program is the Shenandoah National Park quarter. Shenandoah lies within the state of Virginia, just 75 miles from Washington, D.C.

Shenandoah National Park offers a wide range of scenic vistas and outdoor activities. Visitors can enjoy hiking, cruising along Skyline Drive, or camping and picnicking among the waterfalls and wooded hollows.

Among the wildlife that find a home in these mountainous woodlands are the black bear and numerous songbirds.

The park was authorized in 1926 and formally established in 1935. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated it the following year.
