The Story
The town of Saratoga, New York, is the site where British General John Burgoyne surrendered to the American General Horatio Gates. After numerous battles in the autumn of 1777, the victory in Saratoga brought a “turning point” to end the war. Historians consider the Battles of Saratoga to be one of the 15 most significant battles in world history. This crucial American victory renewed patriots’ hopes for independence, secured essential support from the French, Spanish and Dutch, and forever changed the face of the world.
Here are a few noteworthy facts about Saratoga National Historical Park:
- It is home to the Schuyler House — the 1777 country house of American General Philip Schuyler.
- The park hosts the Saratoga Monument — a 155-foot obelisk commemorating the American victory in the Battles of Saratoga.
- The park includes 22 acres of land called the Victory Woods which mark the final encampment site for the British Army prior to their surrender.
