Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Quarter
Coin Description
The Story
In 1980, the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness became part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. The area contains over 2.3 million acres of wilderness. It’s made up of rugged mountains, deep canyons, and wild whitewater rivers, including the Main Salmon River and Middle Fork of the Salmon River.
“Frank Church” was included in the name of the site in honor of late U.S. Senator Frank Church, who played a leading role in its preservation.
The area is the largest single connected wilderness in the 48 contiguous states and contains four national forests.
