The Story
The subject of the tenth quarter in the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program is Chickasaw National Recreation Area. One unique aspect of the park is that an American Indian tribe (the Chickasaw Nation) played a major part in its founding.
Chickasaw National Recreation Area, part of the national park system, was originally established as a national site on in 1902. The recreation area has these purposes:
- To protect the area’s unique resources, such as springs, streams, and lakes.
- To keep those resources available for everyone’s education, appreciation, and recreational use.
- To protect and interpret the area’s historic culture, landscapes, and structures.
- To commemorate the Chickasaw Nation.
