The Story

Ohio’s quarter is flying high! An astronaut and a biplane decorate an outline of the state because of the part Ohio played in travel by air and space.

Two famous astronauts — Neil Armstrong and John Glenn — were both born in Ohio. So was one of the inventors of the airplane.

Ohio put six designs on its Web site, where people voted for the one they liked best. After the top four ideas went to the Mint, Mint artists worked on the designs. The governor finally chose “Birthplace of Aviation Pioneers” as the design that would appear on the state’s quarter.
